A dozen guards could face criminal charges in the first-of-its-kind search of the George Motchan Detention Center, authorities said.
The raid began in the afternoon and continued into the evening. It was part of a larger investigation to root out corruption after complaints that guards supply inmates with drugs and weapons.
Correction officials and authorities from the city Department of Investigation searched inmates’ cells and lockers and common areas used by guards, a law-enforcement source told the media.
Guards were searched on their way into and out of the building and before and after going to inmates’ cells, according to a joint statement released by the Department of Investigation and the Department of Correction.
As of Monday evening, no one had been busted, but authorities said additional referrals and arrests are expected.
