The sanctions imposed by CSU Director of Athletics Jack Graham on Monday included the suspension, and mandatory anger management and diversity training to be approved by the department of athletics and paid by Lupfer, according to a CSU news release late Monday.
"I accept these consequences — two weeks without pay and the training programs and I am thankful for this second chance to continue coaching at Colorado State and be a part of the Ram Family," Lupfer said in a statement.
"I am deeply sorry for my behavior, which does not represent who I am or my values. I embrace the opportunity to participate in anger management and diversity sensitivity training. I was angry and careless with my words, and my words hurt many people. I sincerely apologize to the GLBTQ community for causing pain by using a slur without considering its meaning. I take ownership of my words and fully understand why people are very upset."
Lupfer will receive an official letter of reprimand and be placed on a zero-tolerance status.
During the first quarter, after Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday threw a 25-yard touchdown pass, Halliday was near the CSU sideline and appeared to say something to Lupfer.
Lupfer responded with what television replays showed to be profanity and a gay slur. Rashad Harris, CSU's strength and conditioning coach, then physically kept Halliday from Lupfer, who had turned away and was signalling to his players.
Caught on camera, the incident went viral by halftime.
After the game, Lupfer issued an apology via the CSU football program's Twitter account. CSU head coach Jim McElwain hired Lupfer last year. Lupfer had spent three years as Cal Poly's defensive coordinator. The Dayton, Wash., native graduated from Portland State in 1994.
