TEACHER COUPLE WHO HAD THREESOME WITH A STUDENT WON'T BE CHARGED

pictured: Bambi Deweypictured: John Stalmach
Accused: Bambi Dewey, 32, and John Stalmach, 31, will not be charged with having sex with the student, 16, but misdemeanor charges may be pursued

Two teachers accused of having a threesome with a 16-year-old female student will not be charged after prosecutors found they had not violated any of the laws they were accused of breaking which included soliciting a minor and sexual conduct between a teacher and student.

Clark County School District teachers John Stalmach, 31, and Bambi Dewey, 32, from Las Vegas, were arrested in September after it was discovered the couple had been having three-way sex with a student.
But last month prosecutors dropped the charges against the couple after finding that it was the teen who was the initiator of the sex, that she was the age of legal consent under Nevada law and that she did not attend the same school the teachers worked in when the incident happened.

District Attorney Steve Wolfson said: 'As much as I was personally troubled by their conduct, we can only charge what we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt in court.'
Misdemeanor charges may be pursued, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal.

The Las Vegas Sun reported in September that the Basic High School student initially denied having sex with her teachers before later admitting that she was too embarrassed and afraid of her parents' reaction.

She said she started seeing the teachers outside of school hours including babysitting Dewey's children and spending the night at their home where they would drink shots of whiskey and smoke marijuana before engaging in three-way sex.
The pair initially denied having any sexual relationship with the student and denied giving her alcohol or marijuana but eventually confessed.

The teachers were suspended without pay after their arrest and it is not known whether they will be allowed to return to teaching.

In 2009, Stalmach was accused of improprieties with another freshman girl at Basic High School.
According to the police report, Stalmach was accused of texting a freshman and showing her pornographic pictures, although an investigation produced no evidence and Stalmach was not charged.

Instead, he was transferred to Daily Elementary School, where he is currently a physical education teacher.
Both teachers have been Clark County School District teachers for the last five years.

CASSIDY FREESTYLES ON SWAY IN THE MORNING

NEW SAMSUNG GALAXY CAMERA HITS AT&T STORES

The next time you venture into an AT&T Store to buy a digital camera will be the first time. Oh, sure, any of the smartphones you might purchase at AT&T has a camera built in, perhaps even a decent one. But you're thinking phone first, with the camera providing a subsidiary benefit.
Taking pictures is the primary function for the handsome new Samsung Galaxy Camera that AT&T just started selling. It has a beautiful 4.8-inch high-definition touch display on the rear that can be viewed even in direct sun, the same size screen as on Samsung's popular Galaxy S III smartphone and one that serves as a sweet viewfinder.
Samsung Galaxy CameraThe front — you'll never mistake this point-and-shoot for a phone — is white and attractive. Galaxy Camera is thin enough to fit in a baggy pocket too, though you'll certainly feel the bulk.
So why is it sold at AT&T? The pitch is simple: As with a smartphone, you can conveniently upload pictures and share pictures when you're out and about, zipping them off wirelessly to an online storage locker, social network or via e-mail. And the camera has a superior image sensor and other photographic tools that take it up a notch from the camera on your phone.
Though Galaxy Camera is not a smartphone, it has features in common with its Galaxy kin. Start with the fact that when Wi-Fi is unavailable, the camera can be connected to AT&T's wireless 4G cellular data network (specifically the HSPA + network, not the faster LTE network).
Alas, 4G costs a pricey $10 a month on top of the $499.99 you pay for the camera itself. That gives you between 1 gigabyte and 20 GB of data, but only if you're already part of an AT&T Mobile Share wireless plan. Otherwise, you can pay $15 a month for an individual plan that gives you a mere 250 megabytes of data, or go up to $50 a month for a 5 GB option.
AT&T is giving Galaxy Camera owners 5 GB of free cloud storage, capacity for roughly 5,000 average size photos, in its new AT&T Locker.

4 HOFSTRA BASKETBALL PLAYERS ARRESTED ON BURGLARY AND ROBBING THEIR COACHES HOME

Hofstra University basketball players Dallas Anglin, Jimmy Hall, Shaquille Stokes and Kentrell Washington have been arrested in a string of campus break-ins. The crew even robbed their own coach's house, cops said.

Four Hofstra University basketball players were arrested on burglary charges stemming from a string of break-ins on campus — and the alleged court-side crooks even robbed their coach's house, police said Friday
Six campus dormitory rooms were broken into and Hofstra's basketball head coach Mo Cassara was among the robbery victims, Nassau County police said.
The arrested players were Kentrell Washington, 18, of Las Vegas; Jimmy Hall, 18, of Brooklyn; Dallas Anglin, 18, of Montclair, N.J.; and Shaquille Stokes, 20, of Manhattan.
They were facing arraignment Friday in district court. It was not immediately known if they were represented by attorneys.
Hall, a freshman, is the team's No. 2 scorer. He and Stokes, a sophomore, started in six of the team's seven games this season. Washington and Anglin, both freshmen, have seen regular playing time off the bench.
In a statement, the university said the four had been suspended from the basketball team, classes, residence halls and facilities, pending the outcome of the case.
Melissa Connolly, Hofstra's vice president of university relations, said the public safety department worked with Nassau County police since the investigation began.
Police said six unlocked dorm rooms were broken into between Oct. 4 and Nov. 5. Cash, computers, and other items were taken.
Stokes was charged with five counts of second-degree burglary; Washington was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary; Hall was charged with four counts of second degree burglary; and Anglin was charged with one count of second-degree burglary and one count of tampering with physical evidence.
The team, which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association, is 3-4 this season. It is scheduled to play Southern Methodist University in a home game on Saturday.
Last month, Hofstra suspended players Taran Buie and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel, for violating team rules. The suspensions were for two preseason events and two regular-season games. Hofstra cited student privacy laws in providing no further information in that case.

MOTHER WANTS DEAD SON'S STUDENT LOANS TO BE WAIVED

Three years after her son's death, a 61-year-old Michigan woman is still on the hook for his student loans - and a Change.org petition she started now has nearly 200,000 signatures demanding the companies forgive the loans and change their policies.
Jermaine Edwards went to college to study music production, and his mother, Ella, agreed to cosign his student loans to help him attend school. However, Jermaine died of natural causes in 2009 at age 24, leaving his mother responsible for the loans.
"That's when American Education Services (AES) and National Collegiate Trust (NCT) turned my son's dream into a nightmare for me and the two year old son he left behind," Edwards wrote in the petition.
Edwards had three student loans when he died, two federal and one private. The two federal government loans were forgiven within a month of his death. However, the private loan company is refusing to forgive the loan.
"He was paying the loan bills when he died, but the balance is still over $10,000, and if I'm ever a couple days late on a payment, the calls keep coming until I pay," Edwards told ABC News.
Edwards wrote in the petition that she was so depressed after her son's death that she could barely get out of bed, and has since been under doctors' care. She requested an early retirement, but is now back working. The money is still not enough to cover the bills.
"I am 61 years old and I have been trying to work to make Jermaine's loan payments…but I simply don't have the money," Edwards wrote. "To make matters worse, Jermaine left behind a young son whose mother doesn't have many resources. Therefore, she relies on me to help support Jermaine's son."
The petition directed to the institutions includes a letter calling for forgiveness of the loan.
"I'm horrified at your institution's practice of hounding a dead student's family for repayment of student loans he'll never get a chance to use," to letter reads. "I'm calling on you to do the only humane thing - let this still-grieving mother mourn the loss of her only son in peace. I stand with the Ella Edwards family and decent people everywhere in demanding that you discharge Jermaine Edwards' student loan debt today."
Edwards told ABC she decided to start the petition to demand a change in the laws surrounding student loans, and to warn other parents what they might be getting into if they take out a private loan.
"I suffer every day, and I started the petition because I don't want any other mom to suffer like I am," Edwards said, through tears. "People need to be aware these private loan people will come after you like a shark. I would advise people never to get a private loan until the law changes."
The loan companies have not returned calls for comment from ABC News.

PAPA JOE JACKSON SUFFERS A MILD STROKE

    Joe Jackson

A spokeswoman for Michael Jackson's father says the musical family's patriarch has suffered a mild stroke.

Angel Howansky says Joe Jackson went to a Las Vegas hospital late Wednesday night when he had trouble standing up and walking. She says the 83-year old Jackson was having pains in his head but reports he is feeling fine Thursday and should be released on Friday.

She says he called a friend who drove him to the hospital.

Jackson's wife, Katherine, is reportedly on her way to Las Vegas to be with him. Jackson has maintained a residence there for many years while his wife lives in Los Angeles, where she cares for the late pop star's children.

Howansky says Jackson has had small strokes at least twice before this.

LINDSAY PUNCHES WOMAN IN THE FACE - CHARGED WITH THIRD DEGREE ASSAULT

Actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested Thursday after police said she hit a woman during an argument at a New York City nightclub.
The "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" star was arrested at 4 a.m. and charged with third-degree assault.
She left a police precinct nearly four hours later with a black jacket pulled over her head. She was wearing leggings, a green mini skirt and high-heels, and drove off in a black SUV with a driver and another man who was seen going in and out of the precinct.
She allegedly got into the spat with another woman, Tiffany Eve Mitchell, 28, at Club Avenue, in Manhattan's Chelsea section and punched the woman in face, police said. The woman did not require medical attention.
Lohan's publicist did not immediately return a call for comment.
The arrest is Lohan's latest brush with law enforcement in New York City.
She was involved in a NYPD investigation in September after alleging a man had assaulted her in a New York hotel, but charges against the man were later dropped.
Also in September, the actress was accused of clipping a man with her car outside another Manhattan nightclub, but prosecutors chose not to move ahead with charges.
In October, police were called to her childhood home on Long Island after a report of fight between her and her mother. An investigation revealed "no criminality."
The actress was also involved in a car accident in California this summer that sent her and an assistant to a hospital, but didn't result in serious injuries for anyone. The accident remains under investigation.
In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.
Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace from a jewelry store without permission last year. That means she doesn't have to check in with a judge or probation officer but could face a jail term if arrested again.

RYAN LESLIE ORDERED TO PAY $1 MILLION JUDGEMENT ON RENEGED PROMISE OF REWARD FOR MISSING LAPTOP

LEGAL LOSER: Hip-hop music mogul Ryan Leslie leaves federal court in Manhattan yesterday after losing a $1 million judgement.
Hip-hop music mogul Ryan Leslie leaves federal court in Manhattan yesterday after losing a $1 million judgement.
Jurors taught a big-talking hip-hop artist a lesson about broken promises yesterday when they ordered him to pay the $1 million reward he had offered for the return of his stolen laptop.
Cheapskate performer and producer Ryan Leslie must fork over the Benjamins to auto-repair-shop owner Armin Augstein, who found the computer while walking his dog and turned it over to German cops in November 2010.
In a YouTube video, Leslie had promised a $1 million reward to whoever found the missing laptop and an external hard drive. But when Augstein produced the goods, Leslie went from big-money mogul to double-talking skinflint.
    AUGSTEIN -
Augstein, who returned home to Pulheim, Germany, after testifying against Leslie in Manhattan federal court, told The Post by phone he felt “very good” about the verdict.
“I’m very happy . . . that the American judicial system, which is so totally different from ours, functioned so well with a jury that are not professionals and are laymen,” he said in German through one his lawyers, Steven Thal.
Augstein, 54, said he remained “disappointed” with Leslie — who suggested Augstein might have been involved in the theft — even though the music man was “personally very friendly” the two times they met.
“No one forced him to make an offer of so much money for a finder’s fee,” Augstein said.
“It seems like he believes that that which he promised, he doesn’t have to live up to.”
Leslie, 34, sat stone-faced as the unanimous verdict was announced after just over three hours of deliberations.
Leslie — who had earlier joked he would either “be writing checks or buying Maseratis” — insisted afterward, “I’m not disappointed” and said he would consider an appeal.
He also remained unrepentant about his refusal to honor the reward, which he initially set at $20,000, but then increased to $1 million in the YouTube video.
“The reasons I defended myself in the case are the same reasons I believe Mr. Augstein is not entitled to the reward,” Leslie said.
Leslie testified Tuesday that his offer was contingent upon his ability to retrieve several unreleased multitrack songs stored on the hard drive, which he said couldn’t be accessed after he got it back.
But Judge Harold Baer Jr. yesterday told jurors that because Leslie disposed of the hard drive by returning it to the manufacturer after Augstein claimed the reward, they could assume that the data was there when Augstein handed it over.
The verdict came about 45 minutes after jurors sent out a note saying they were divided because “we feel the $1 million is too high,” and asking if they could compromise on a lower amount.
Leslie’s lawyers then sought some time to try to strike a settlement, but Augstein’s team said “that ship has sailed” and insisted that the jury be told to continue deliberating toward an all-or-nothing decision.
None on the six women and two men on the panel would comment afterward.
Last night, Leslie seemed to accept the verdict, tweeting. “Ain’t no way to get around ups & downs.’ Jury of my peers rules for the plaintiff.”
During closing arguments, defense lawyer Bill DeStefano called Augstein’s account of finding Leslie’s belongings “fishy,” noting that the park where he walked his dog is about 15 miles from Cologne, where the theft took place.
Augstein’s lawyer, Michael Fischman, said the suggestion that Augstein was involved in the theft showed how “desperate” Leslie was to avoid paying the reward.

"WHO'S F**KING MY DAUGHTER", ANGRY DAD SHOWS UP AT HIGH SCHOOL SWINGING A CHAIN WITH A PADLOCK

    35-year-old Michael Canaii
An overprotective dad was so hellbent on setting his daughter straight that he showed up at her Midtown high school yesterday morning swinging a heavy chain with a padlock and demanding to speak to the principal.

“Who’s f--king my daughter?” 35-year-old Michael Canaii (pictured, at his arraignment last night) barked at the HS of Graphic Communication Arts on West 49th Street, according to a school source.
“He was yelling and complaining that his daughter was smoking weed and not listening to him, and he wanted the school to do something about that,” said a law-enforcement source.

The hulking Canaii, who was wearing all black, also insisted on talking to his daughter when he first showed up at the school at about 9 a.m.

“A man was outside with a chain. He was saying, ‘Where is my daughter?’ ” said a student. “He was swinging the chain saying, ‘I’m going to f--k you all up.’ One guy said something sly, and he took off after the guy and ran into the school.”
Inside, he threatened to fight anyone in his path, the school source said. Security cleared the lobby and students were blocked from entering, the source said. But his only crime — besides alleged criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and pot possession — was caring too much.
“[He] asked two students to take their stuff off and fight him in the lobby. He also asked security agents and a dean to ‘fight’ him as he was swinging a big chain around yelling, ‘No one is going to touch me,’ ” said the source.

“He’s a decent father,” said Canaii’s aunt, Sondra Williams, adding that the teen lives with her mother.
Canaii was briefly hospitalized after his arrest and was arraigned last night in Manhattan Criminal Court.
His lawyer said Canaii went to the school because he feared his daughter was involved in gang activity.
The dad was held in lieu of $5,000 bond or $1,000 cash bail.

SHOW ME THE MONEY! POWERBALL WINNERS IN ARIZONA AND MISSOURI

The richest Powerball jackpot ever -- and the second-largest top prize in U.S. lottery history -- has been won. The question now becomes: Who are the lucky winners waking up to new lives as multimillionaires?
Powerball officials said early Thursday morning that tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri matched all six numbers to win the record $579.9 million jackpot.
The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.
It was not clear whether the winning tickets belonged to individuals or were purchased by groups. Arizona lottery officials said early Thursday morning they had no information on that state's winner or winners but would announce where it was sold during a news conference later in the day. Lottery officials in Missouri did not immediately respond to phone messages and emails seeking comment.
Americans went on a ticket-buying spree in the run-up to Wednesday's drawing, the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to purchase a shot at the second-largest payout in U.S. history.
Tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide -- about six times the volume from a week ago. That pushed the jackpot even higher before the Wednesday night drawing, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association.
A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million.

THE BLACK WOMEN STRUGGLE WITH THEIR HAIR

Cheryl Swinger damaged her hair over the years, after two decades of wearing weaves. The more her hair dropped out, the more reliant she was on extensions to cover up her bald spots.
“Over a period of 16 years my hair was thin and damaged,” says Swinger, 47, a hospital administrative assistant, based in Atlanta. “I used sew-in and glue but the damage was worse with glue.”
She admits, though, she wore her weaves for far too long. “By the time I was ready to take it out I would lose my own hair,” says Swinger. “I have lost whole braids before.”
In fact, according to some dermatologists, hair loss is epidemic among black American women. “Hair loss is a significant problem for many African-American women of all ages,” says Dr. Susan Taylor, a Harvard-trained dermatologist. “I probably see 20 women a week with hair loss.”
Afro-textured hair tends to be dryer and more prone to breakage and certain hairstyles can result in stress to the scalp, say hair experts.
The most common problems for women of color are central centrifugal cicatricial alopeci (CCCA) and traction alopecia.  Both these conditions can be reversible, but can also lead to permanent damage to hair follicles.
With CCCA, hair loss begins in the center of the scalp and spreads out; it is caused by multiple factors, including chemical relaxers or hot combing. Traction alopecia, which many believe supermodel Naomi Campbell is suffering from, is hair loss that occurs as a result of continuous pulling of the hair.
“For traction alopecia, avoid any tight hairstyles including braids with extensions, tight weaves, tight ponytails and cornrow,” says Dr. Taylor. “For CCCA, you will need to have a biopsy performed to confirm the diagnosis and then begin treatment with creams, injections or pills.”
Dr. Phoenyx Austin, author of If You Love It, It Will Grow: A Guide To Growing Long Afro-Textured Hair, says women failing to care for their own hair underneath braids, weaves and other types of extensions can also cause extensive damage.
“It’s easy to forget about maintaining your own hair when a weave or wig is on top,” says Dr. Phoenyx. “It’s about taking care of what’s underneath — now you have another layer of hair you pay attention to.”
Dr. Phoenyx says one of the problems for women who continuously wear extensions is that they are cannot properly wash or condition their own hair. But “hair follicles are living things,” she says. “They need oxygen and nutrients.”
For Swinger, the only option now is a wearing a fitted custom wig, which has been her preferred hairstyle for the last four years. She says her hair is healthier and she can condition her locks when necessary.
Rose Kelly, a hair extensions expert and owner of Salon Nede, is the stylist who fits Swinger’s wigs. “I tell my clients they can achieve what they want to achieve but with less aggressive methods.”
“Women need to get weaves or hair extensions professionally installed and professionally cared for,” says Kelly. “Don’t wear the hair for too long. I’d advise two to three months, only if the weaves are done well. The hair also needs to be cleaned and dried properly to avoid damage.”
With the ever-growing problem of hair loss among black women is the increasing popularity of “miracle” hair products to repair broken hair. One such product is T444Z.
“Hair loss among black people is at its all-time high,” says Lois Machamire, one of the T444Z U.S regional distributors. “T444Z works to eliminate that problem. We have developed a product, using traditional herbs and plants extracts, that wasn’t produced in a laboratory but through years of dedication, hard work, commitment and patience.”
In extreme cases, women even resort to surgery. “Hair transplants have become increasingly popular for women,” says Hart Monroe, a patient services representative at Bosley, a hair restoration provider. “A substantial number of our clientele are now women and a good proportion of these are African-American.”
Indeed, hair loss among black women is a big issue, exacerbated by the use of wigs, hair pieces, micro braids and chemicals not always compatible with afro hair. The question is, will women who care about their appearance ever give up the desire for quick fixes and instant beauty?

NFL PLAYERS USE VIAGRA ON FIELD SAY CHICAGO BEARS WR BRANDON MARSHALL

The NFL is embroiled in a controversy over Adderall, which has been used by many athletes for its performance-enhancing advantages. Adderall is commonly used to treat ADHD, so it's odd to see it mentioned in the context of a performance-enhancing drug used by football players. But that's not the only odd drug used by athletes.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall says he's heard of something even stranger used by players.
“I don’t know too much about Adderall,” Marshall said Wednesday according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “I know guys, it is such a competitive league, guys try anything just to get that edge. I’m fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge. But some guys, they’ll do whatever they can to get an edge.
“I’ve heard of some crazy stories. I’ve heard (of) guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff. So, you know, it’s kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things so you have to be careful.”
And we thought the excuse Richard Sherman reportedly gave for his positive drug test was bizarre.
Marshall's comments actually aren't as crazy as they seem.
In 2008, The New York Times discussed the performance-enhancing advantages of Viagra. Viagra dilates blood vessels and increases oxygenation, which could boost a player’s performance, particularly in a city like Denver where the elevation is a major factor.
“It clearly provides an unfair advantage, at least at altitude,” an expert leading the World Anti-Doping Association’s research told the New York Times.
Marshall spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos, which is likely where he saw the product used.
WADA even financed a study involving Marywood University’s lacrosse teams to see if they could determine whether Viagra was potent enough to be added to the banned substance list. They ended up not adding it to the banned list after determining it did not have strong enough performance-enhancing effects.
Who would have figured that a product marketed to enhance one’s sexual performance could also boost an athlete’s play on the field?

WIDESPREAD BACTERIA AND DRUGS FOUND IN US PORK SAMPLES

Samples of U.S. pork-chop and ground-pork have been found to contain significant amounts of harmful and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, along with low levels of a growth hormone used to promote growth in pigs, an analysis from Consumer Reports revealed.

About 3 percent to 7 percent of the pork samples contained dangerous bacteria, such as salmonella, staphylococcus aureus and listeria monocytogenes, all of which are notorious for causing foodborne illnesses.  Most notably, the report found widespread contamination of the bacterium yersinia enterocolitica.  Known for inducing fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain, yersinia enterocolitica was in 69 percent of the tested samples.

In 198 samples, some of the bacteria discovered by the analysis were found to be antibiotic-resistant, which Consumer Reports suggested may be a result of the pork farming industry’s common use of low-dose antibiotics to promote weight gain.  Antibiotic-resistant bacteria has become a recent cause for concern in the past few years, because these harmful “superbugs” cannot be treated by conventional antibiotics.

About one-fifth of the pork products tested also contained low levels of the drug ractopamine, which is often used in pigs raised for food to accelerate their growth and leanness.  While the drug is approved in the U.S., it is banned in the European Union, China and Taiwan.

Overall, the ground pork samples were more likely to contain bacteria than the pork chops.

WHITE MAN ALLEGEDLY KILLS UNARMED BLACK TEEN OVER LOUD MUSIC

There has been another controversial shooting of an unarmed black teen in Florida and once again the “Stand Your Ground” law is being evoked by the gunman.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, Michael Dunn, a 45-year-old Florida resident, allegedly shot and killed 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis after the teenager and his three friends refused to turn their music down during a confrontation at a Jacksonville area gas station.
“Jordan and Dunn exchanged words, and Dunn pulled a gun and shot eight or nine times, striking Jordan twice,” reports the Sentinel. Jordan was sitting in the back seat and no one else was apparently hurt.
Dunn, who is reportedly a gun collector, was arrested in his home on Saturday on charges of murder and attempted murder. He is currently being held without bail.
“He got threatened and had to do what he had to do, and it’s sad, so sad,” the shooter’s daughter Rebecca Dunn said in an interview with ABC 12. “A terrible tragedy on both sides. It really is. I don’t know. What are you going to do in that situation? You don’t know what you are going to do. He just reacted.”
“He didn’t think he had harmed anybody and he just thought he had scared them off and he wanted to report it, but he didn’t want to go in a sense, throw himself to the wolves in a strange city without representation,” said Dunn’s attorney Robin Lemonidis.
According to Huffington Post, “Davis was a student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school in Duval County. He will be buried in his hometown of Marietta, Ga. His family plans to start a foundation in his honor for at-risk youth who have been the victims of tragedy.”

MEXICAN MAYOR MARIA GORROSTIETA MURDERED BY DRUGLORDS, BODY FOUND BURNED AND BEATEN IN A DITCH

Courageous Mexican mayor Maria Santos Gorrostieta
Courageous Mexican mayor Maria Santos Gorrostieta cheated death twice when she survived assassination attempts by druglords — but three times was too much. Gorrostieta, dubbed a “heroine of the 21st century” for her refusal to be cowed by the ruthless cartels that rule much of Mexico, was kidnapped in broad daylight this month after leaving her home in the town of Morelia.

She was driving her daughter to school when thugs in another vehicle blocked her white van. They pulled her out and began kicking and beating her in front of passers-by.
The 36-year-old mother begged the men to spare her girl and appeared to get into the thugs’ vehicle voluntarily, witnesses said.

As mayor of the town of Tiquicheo, Maria Santos Gorrostieta defied the area’s drug cartels, once baring her scars from two assassination attempts to rally support for her war on drugs. Her body was found mutilated in a ditch this month, days after she was abducted. Gorrostieta, mayor of the town of Tiquicheo from 2008 to 2011, had previously had a police escort and government security assigned to her.

But despite the two ambushes — which killed her husband and left her horribly scarred — her protection was pulled after she left office. “No one could do anything to help her,” newspaper El Universal said of her abduction two weeks ago. Her relatives waited for a call from the kidnappers, hoping they would trade her for ransom. No call came. The family alerted police, who launched a search.

Five days after her disappearance, farm workers found Gorrostieta’s body — stabbed, burned and beaten — in a roadside ditch in the town of San Juan Tararameo. Her relatives identified the body of the mother of three the next day.

Parts of Mexico have become a no-man’s-land, where legal authorities fear to tread and death comes cheap. Over the weekend, 19 bodies were found in the northern border state of Chihuahua, including those of eight people who had been tortured and killed on Friday.

Many of the dead have been victims of the drug cartels, which have increasingly included elected and appointed officials. Since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a war on the cartels six years ago, about two dozen mayors have been murdered.

Gorrostieta was one of at least seven women who were willing to serve as mayors or police chiefs.

MEXICAN BEAUTY PAGEANT CONTESTANT KILLED IN GUN BATTLE BETWEEN SOLDIERS AND ALLEGED DRUG TRAFFICKERS

A 20-year-old state beauty queen died in a gun battle between soldiers and the alleged gang of drug traffickers she was traveling with in a scene befitting the hit movie "Miss Bala," or "Miss Bullet," about Mexico's not uncommon ties between narcos and beautiful pageant contestantsThe body of Maria Susana Flores Gamez was found Saturday lying near an assault rifle on a rural road in a mountainous area of the drug-plagued state of Sinaloa, the chief state prosecutor said Monday. It was unclear if she had used the weapon. "She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout," state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said. "That's what we're going to have to investigate."
The slender, 5-foot-7-inch brunette was voted the 2012 Woman ofSinaloa in a beauty pageant in February. In June, the model competed with other seven contestants for the more prestigious state beauty contest, Our Beauty Sinaloa, but didn't win. The Our Beauty state winners compete for the Miss Mexico title, whose holder represents the country in the international Miss Universe. Higuera said Flores Gamez was traveling in one of the vehicles that engaged soldiers in an hours-long chase and running gun battle on Saturday near her native city of Guamuchil in the state of Sinaloa, home to Mexico's most powerful drug cartel. Higuera said two other members of the drug gang were killed and four were detained.
The shootout began when the gunmen opened fire on a Mexican army patrol. Soldiers gave chase and cornered the gang at a safe house in the town of Mocorito. The other men escaped, and the gunbattle continued along a nearby roadway, where the gang's vehicles were eventually stopped. Six vehicles, drugs and weapons were seized following the confrontation. It was at least the third instance in which a beauty queen or pageant contestants have been linked to Mexico's violent drug gangs, a theme so common it was the subject of a critically acclaimed 2011 movie.
In "Miss Bala," Mexico's official submission to the Best Foreign Language Film category of this year's Academy Awards, a young woman competing for Miss Baja California becomes an unwilling participant in a drug-running ring, finally getting arrested for deeds she was forced into performing. In real life, former Miss Sinaloa Laura Zuniga was stripped of her 2008 crown in the Hispanoamerican Queen pageant after she was detained on suspicion of drug and weapons violations. She was later released without charges. Zuniga was detained in western Mexico in late 2010 along with seven men, some of them suspected drug traffickers. Authorities found a large stash of weapons, ammunition and $53,300 with them inside a vehicle.
In 2011, a Colombian former model and pageant contestant was detained along with Jose Jorge Balderas, an accused drug trafficker and suspect in the 2010 bar shooting of Salvador Cabanas, a former star for Paraguay's national football team and Mexico's Club America. She was also later released. Higuera said Flores Gamez's body has been turned over to relatives for burial.
"This is a sad situation," Higuera told a local radio station. She had been enrolled in media courses at a local university, and had been modeling and in pageants since at least 2009. Javier Valdez, the author of a 2009 book about narco ties to beauty pageants entitled "Miss Narco," said "this is a recurrent story." "There is a relationship, sometimes pleasant and sometimes tragic, between organized crime and the beauty queens, the pageants, the beauty industry itself," Valdez said. "It is a question of privilege, power, money, but also a question of need," said Valdez. "For a lot of these young women, it is easy to get involved with organized crime, in a country that doesn't offer many opportunities for young people."
Sometimes drug traffickers seek out beauty queens, but sometimes the models themselves look for narco boyfriends, Valdez said.
