Naomi Campbell: Victoria Beckham used too many white models

Supermodel Naomi Campbell called out her friend Victoria Beckham for only having one model of color in her presentation during February’s New York Fashion Week.
But Campbell revealed to the UK’s Daily Mirror that she phoned the Spice Girl-turned-fashion designer personally about the matter.

Campbell, along with fellow supermodel Iman and model advocate Bethann Hardison, are spearheading advocate group Diversity Coalition, which calls for more faces of color to be used in fashion shows.

The Coalition in September wrote an open letter to governing bodies of Fashion Weeks around the globe, calling out an number of designers and brands including Armani, Donna Karan, Roberto Cavalli, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Calvin Klein for lack of diversity in their fashion shows.
“No matter the intention, the result is racism,” the letter bluntly stated.

Beckham has been named in the letter, but Campbell went so far as to call the designer personally to discuss the matter.

“I called Victoria and I spoke to her,” Campbell told the Mirror. “I don’t want to pin-point anyone. It isn’t a blame game. Everyone’s name was on that letter because they’d done it. It could have been completely unintentional. She is one of the designers on there like anyone else.”

Campbell, who has been modeling since the mid 80s after being discovered at 15, said she knew the letter would rile some designers. But she wasn’t worried about the response.

“Absolutely not! There is no way to candycoat this sort of thing. You have to be straight,” she told the Mirror.
