The elegant coupe and cabriolet officially bow at the Detroit Auto Show.
Mercedes-Benz has revealed the facelifted 2014 E-Class coupe and cabriolet ahead of a public debut later this month at the Detroit Auto Show. The new design arrives in dealerships in summer 2013.
Following hot on the heels of the revised E-Class sedan and wagon, the two-door duo has been given a comprehensive front-end restyle in an effort to bring a more cohesive look to the entire Mercedes lineup.
Gone is the signature quad-headlamp treatment of the outgoing model. It is replaced by more conventional appearance with a pair of larger headlamps that differ in shape from those of the E-Class sedan and wagon. The grille has also been made larger and now boasts Mercedes' latest propeller-inspired look for a cleaner appearance. Further changes are focused within the front bumper, which has been given an edgier look.
The engine lineup for the coupe and cabriolet continues to mirror that of the standard E-Class sedan and wagon with the choice of two gasoline engines — both carried over from the outgoing model — with detailed upgrades that are claimed to provide incremental improvements in fuel economy and emissions.
A naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 develops 302 hp in the E350, while a twin-turbocharged 4.6-liter V8 produces 402 hp in the top-of-the-line E550.
As with their predecessors, Mercedes' midrange two-door models receive a standard seven-speed automatic with a steering wheel-mounted shift lever along with stop/start and brake-energy-recuperation systems. Both the E350 and E550 coupe and cabriolet come as standard with rear-wheel drive, although the E550 can be ordered with optional 4Matic all-wheel drive.
Mercedes is adding to the standard equipment packages, with collision-prevention assist (a radar-based collision warning system with the ability to brake the car, reducing the severity of an impact) and a second generation of attention assist (which detects drowsiness) now part of basic configurations.
The E-Class coupe and cabriolet also receive an optional stereo multipurpose camera that provides a three-dimensional image in front of the car and permits the inclusion of a range of hi-tech anticollision systems, including Distronic Plus with steering assist, which helps to keep the car centered in the lane and tracks traffic in tailbacks, and brake assist plus with junction assist, which can detect cross-traffic and pedestrians, boosting the braking power if the brakes are insufficiently applied by the driver to avoid an impact.
Mercedes-Benz has yet to reveal pricing details for the 2014 E-Class coupe and cabriolet but insiders suggest there won't be much change from today's stickers.
