A student has given birth in a bathroom at a Wilmington high school bathroom.
Schools spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum says the student gave birth in a bathroom around 3.30pm Tuesday at Hoggard High School.

The student and her baby were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

The mother has not been named and her age has not been released, but the public school  serves 1,902 children between the ages of 14 to 18 years old.

‘The school nurse assisted and acted heroically helping the student and the baby into the ambulance to go to the hospital,’ Ms Quattlebaum told local news station WECT.

The spokeswoman did not know the baby's gender, and she would not reveal any personal information about the mother due to federal student privacy laws.

North Carolina is on the lower end of the national rankings of teenage pregnancies, and their state’s teen birthrate has dropped dramatically over the past decade.

That said, the Greensboro News Record reports that there were 15,957 teenage girls who had children in the state in 2010.
