Smartphones, however, have been going a different direction — they’ve been getting so much larger that we had to invent a new phrase to describe their enormous size, the phablet.
Almost every major smartphone manufacturer hopped aboard the trend, but it took Apple — more or less the trendsetter in the field — until the iPhone 5 to increase its phone’s size.
Now, just two iterations beyond that, reports have been claiming that the next iPhones to release at the end of this year will once again increase in size.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the omniscient and omnipresent “people familiar with the matter” have stated that this year’s iteration of the iPhone will once again grow in size. Interestingly, the sources are claiming that the two iPhones won’t just be twins with different innards — like the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C — that share the same-sized screen. Instead, one model will sport a screen larger than 4.5 inches, and the other will feature a screen larger than five inches.
The sources also claimed that Apple will abandon the plastic casing of the iPhone 5C to instead use the higher-end metal casings on the two new phones. This isn’t necessarily to make both phones feel like a premium model, but likely because the iPhone 5C didn’t meet expected demand.
Supposedly, the new phones won’t feature a curved display — a feature that we here at Geek are sure no one will feel too broken up over. The sources also state that the smaller of the phones is nearing the mass production phase, while the larger is only in the early stages of development.
Obviously, Apple has declined to comment on the matter. However, the Wall Street Journal has a respectable track record regarding Apple rumors. So while you shouldn’t curse your brand new iPhone 5S just yet if you really dig a bigger display, it would be a little surprising if the next iPhone doesn’t feature one.
