OFFICER SCOTT CROW |
Brandie Redell,34, had been pinched at a Von Maur store in Davenport, Iowa, when she called her boyfriend to pick up their daughter.
When one of the officers heard her boyfriend’s name, community activist James Gibson, that’s when the cop went crazy, Redell said.
"`This is going to get ugly really quick,’" Redell quoted officer Scott Crow moments before he began pummeling her for a full minute.
Redell can be seen recoiling in fear as Crow approached her and began punching her mercilessly.
The video showed a store employee grabbing Redell’s baby girl and quickly getting her out of the way, as the beating continued.
Redell’s right eye was swollen nearly shut from the beating and claims she’s lost about 70 percent of her vision from that side.
Redell admitted to the shoplifting but insisted the officer was way out of bounds.
“I’ve been punished by the law [for shoplifting] and I’m dealing with that part but I still don’t understand how that resulted in my face being beaten like that,” she told WBBM in Chicago.
Redell is white and her boyfriend Gibson is black. Gibson has previously done sensitivity training with local police.
“It’s really a travesty for the department because they do have good officers in the Davenport Police Department,” he said. “That was no way right. It shouldn’t be tolerated.”
Police chief Frank Donchez agreed.
“Was he [Crow] within policy? No,” Donchez said. “We need to conduct an internal investigation.”
Redell filed a formal complaint against Crow, following the Feb. 14 beating.
She’s been told her complaint was upheld, and that officer Crow was punished. But he’s still employed by the department, according to Redell.
"I can't believe he is still an officer," she told the Quad-City Times.
Redell and Gibson have asked Chicago-based Living and Driving While Black Foundation to help bring their case to the US Department Justice, so feds can determine of her civil rights were violated.
