The fight, which occurred on Saturday on a northbound Bergen/Port Jervis line train, ended when officials kicked 16 people off of the train.
It’s unclear what caused the fight. NJ.com reports that the brawl broke out inside of one of the cars shortly after the train had departed from Secaucus. The train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in East Rutherford in order to deal with the rowdy passengers.
The brawl resulted in two tickets for disorderly conduct and at least one minor injury. NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. said that the train was back on track about 20 minutes after the incident.
This isn't the first time that NJ Transit has had to deal with rowdy passengers during St. Patrick’s Day. Last year, 16 people were arrested, including two who were charged with assaulting the conductor, on the train during St. Patty’s Day weekend. The city tried to prevent a similar incident this year by temporarily banning alcohol aboard the train.
The cause of the brawl on the train has not been determined, and it’s unclear if any of the passengers involved had been drinking.
The NJ Transit System has been rebuilding since it took some damage during Hurricane Sandy. Executive Director James Weinstein said last week that the service has almost been completely restored.
