The Sony PlayStation 4, or PS4, seems to be all the rage for gaming fans. But smartphone fanatics who happen to want the PS4 might be thrilled to know that they can use their iOS or Android devices as second screens with the PS4 via a PlayStation app.
At first, it would seem incredibly odd to want to a PlayStation app to connect the PS4 with an iOS or Android device for use as a second screen. They're incredibly small and it feels like it would be more of a distraction during gaming than anything else. However, the iPad or any of the number of halfway decent Android tablets out there might make excellent second screens.
It's also interesting to see what a PlayStation app will do besides connecting iOS and Android smartphones and tablets to the PS4. The possibilities seem limitless. It would be nice, for example, to use an iPhone as a keyboard for punching in usernames and passwords for PS4 games rather than using the gaming controller. Being able to use the iOS and Android devices as a remote control for the PS4 would also be pretty neat.

The addition of support for Android and iOS is the most interesting, and perhaps surprising, element. It has announced the “PlayStation App”, which will turn smartphones and tablets into dedicated PS4 second screens, giving access to a range of in-game data and functionality, such as a dedicated screen for viewing in-game maps. Other functionality — and we suspect there is a wide range of possibilities here — includes an option to watch other gamers play, which could also be useful in head-to-head or collaborative titles. Sony also says that the app will allow gamers to buy games for the PS4 while they are on the road. Titles purchased on other devices will download to the console when they are home and connected via WiFi.
