MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL, WESTCHESTER NY |
Multiple police agencies were called in to back up Mount Vernon Police after several fights broke out in the cafeteria at Mount Vernon High School, which resulted in the arrest of seven combatants.
First responders arrived at the high school around noon on Nov. 29, where they greeted by flying bottles, cans and food that were being hurled at them by students as the police attempted to break up the brawls, said Mount Vernon Police.
Officers removed and scattered the people involved in the altercations, but a crowd of approximately 200 students followed the police outside and continued what became a melee said police, which was when backup was requested.
Officers used “non-lethal methods” to restrain the combatants and take control of the scene, said Mount Vernon Police. Seven arrests were made for various charges.
The school was originally placed under lockdown, and then students were dismissed to ensure their safety. Superintendent Judith Johnson worked with the Mount Vernon Police and the School Board to bring the situation under control.
Seven were taken into custody.
Colin Clarke, 18, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and dis/con fighting behavior.
Demitre Loderick, 18, was charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and dis/con fighting behavior.
Breana Rigsbee, 22, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and dis/con fighting behavior.
Aliyah Ellison, 16, was charged with resisting arrest and dis/con fighting behavior.
Marvin Taylor, 17, was charged with resisting arrest and second-degree rioting.
Travis Maurile, 18, was charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and dis/con fighting behavior.
The identity of the seventh arrest was not released because the person is under the age of 16 and therefore considered a minor.
No major injuries to officers or students were reported. The cause of the fights is still under investigation.
Mount Vernon Police will have an extra presence at the high school today to ensure peace, said Shari Harris, special assistant to Mayor Ernie Davis.
The Mount Vernon Police Department did not release any further information about the incident, and several attempts to contact the police for more details were unsuccessful. Judith Johnson, superintendent of schools, did not respond to requests for a comment.
