For the fourth time in five years, Usain Bolt was named the 2012 Male World Athlete of the Year and, in her first time receiving the honor, Allyson Felix was named Female World Athlete of the Year at the IAAF Centenary Gala celebration on Nov. 24. In addition to a trophy, the winners receive $100,000 cash.
Bolt defended both his 100m and 200m titles at the Olympic Games in London, setting the world's fastest times of the year at 9.63 and 19.32 respectively. In the men's 4x100m he anchored a Jamaican team which set a 36.84 world record.
27-year-old Allyson Felix, from Los Angeles, won the Olympic 200m title in London and was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m and 4x400m Relay teams. She became the first woman since 1988 to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games.
