POMPANO BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A woman has died after a parasailing accident Wednesday afternoon.
According to Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, the 28-year-old woman was tandem parasailing off Hillsboro Inlet with her husband, at around 3:15 p.m. The couple, visiting from Connecticut, were somewhere up as high as 150 to 250 feet in the air when the woman somehow slipped out of her harness.
Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher arrived at the scene and explained what happened. "Her harness failed and broke, and she fell approximately 150 feet into the water," he said.
The boat's crew reeled in the husband, who was not injured, and turned the boat around to pick up the woman. Crew members found the woman floating face down on the water, in cardiac arrest.
They rushed her to shore where Pompano Beach Fire Rescue crews met them. They performed CPR and took her to Broward Health North Hospital in critical condition. Doctors would later pronounce her deceased.
The two men manning boat refused to comment.
Errol Lyons a fellow boater said, "It's sad, you know. I mean it's probably their vacation, and this tragedy happens with this parasailing."
Cliff Hall, another boater, said, "It's like getting on a roller coaster. You pay to do that, and like with anything, risks are inherent."
This marks the second parasailing accident for the City of Pompano Beach in just a few years. In 2007, a 15-year-old was killed. She and her sister were parasailing when high winds caused her tow-line to snap. The sisters crashed into the rough of a nearby home.
"This is accident number two in the city of Pompano Beach," said Fisher, "so we want to do anything we can as a city to make sure legislation is put in place sp these posts, these harnesses can be inspected on a regular basis, and right now that's not occurring, and that's what upsets us, so something has to be done."
The state handles these regulations, but the mayor is trying to get things changed.
In 2007, BSO determined equipment failure lead to that 15-year-old's death. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is now investigating this latest incident.
