Kanye West Says He Didn't Write Down Lyrics For 1st Four Albums. Spent 5000 Hours Writing 'Power'

Jay-Z is probably the most well known rapper to proclaim that he doesn't usually write down his lyrics before recording them. Kanye West has worked closely with Hova since the beginning of his career and it seems he learned a lot from watching his Roc-A-Fella Records boss. In an outtake from Ice-T's documentary Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, Yeezy says he didn't write his lyrics down for his first four albums.

"I didn't write my raps down for my first four albums. I did it from the head straight to the booth," Kanye said. "But on this last album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, I wrote it because I really put myself in the zone that my life was dependent on the success of this album. With that being the case, I said, 'You know what? No matter what anybody says about me, I can write something that can make someone that hates me the most have to really respect or love the song.' So even a song like 'Power,' Like we spent 5,000 hours writing it, and it's really psychology behind the lyrics too. It's not just blatantly, 'Hey I got all the powers.' [It's] 'No one man should have all that power.' And It's wording it in a really sensitive way that opens it up for everyone."
