A Facebook status update from the Yankees likely had Bombers fans frantically searching for the dis-like button.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday a bizarre and alarming status update popped up on the the Yankees’ page on the social networking site:
We regret to inform our fans that Derek Jeter will miss the rest of the season with sexual reassignment surgery. He promises to come back stronger than ever in 2013 as Minnie Mantlez.
But it appears that the Yankees weren’t the only victims of Internet hijinks Thursday.
The Cubs’ Facebook account also appeared to have been hacked after a message appeared on the club’s page that read: “F--- Bill Murray.”
The Yankees had no comment on the social media snafu.
According to a source, the Facebook pages are run by Major League Baseball and not the individual teams.
Jeter famously appeared in drag when he hosted Saturday Night Live in 2001. Jeter, aka Candy Soriano, donned a wig and had his face made up for a sketch about Yankees’ wives. Giants quarterback Eli Manning followed in the captain’s high heels this spring when he hosted the program and also got all dolled up for a show segment.
