"Holmies" - followers of James Holmes
Teenagers upload photos of themselves sporting plaid flannel and drinking Slurpees.
It doesn’t seem out of the ordinary, but it’s in tribute to James Holmes, the suspect in the biggest mass shooting in U.S. history.
“Holmies” are a growing fan community with their own inside jokes and displays of devotion to the 24-year-old accused of killing 12 people at an Aurora, Colo. showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.”
The meme-gathering website Buzzfeed uncovered a trove of Holmie art, much of it posted to the blogging site Tumblr.
One drawing shows Holmes, wearing flannel and holding a Slurpee, surrounded by the message “Remember Holmies, to love and tolerate ‘cause haters gonna hate.”
Another portrays Holmes receiving fan mail in jail.
Holmes was reportedly wearing plaid flannel under the body armor he strapped on before allegedly opening fire in Aurora. In a video of him addressing a science camp at age 18, his introduction says his dream is to own a Slurpee machine one day.
Scanning Tumblr for Holmies reveals several avowed fans, whether real or ironic, but also posts from users outraged at the outpouring of love for an accused killer.
“I have no idea how you can worship that sick man and glorify his actions,” one wrote.
“I can understand it if you’re fascinated by the minds of killers,” another said. “But really? Idolizing him, dressing like him, creating art of him and paying tribute to him? This is even more incomprehensible than the incident itself.”

“Wearin plaid, sippin on a Slurpee,” one girl captioned her self-photo. “Just a typical Holmie.”
Holmes fans are also gathering in the comments section of the YouTube video for “Slurpee Rap,” a 2011 track by the female rapper MC G. Snaps and circulating information on what kind of mail he can get while in custody.Scanning Tumblr for Holmies reveals several avowed fans, whether real or ironic, but also posts from users outraged at the outpouring of love for an accused killer.
