SKETCH OF FEMALE VIGILANTE |
The woman, described as 5-foot-4 and in her 50s, said she was avenging the rapes and murders of hundreds of women since the 1990s in Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas.
“I myself and other women have suffered in silence, but we can’t stay quiet anymore,” she said in e-mails to news organizations.
“We were victims of sexual violence by the drivers on the night shift on the routes to the maquilas,” a reference to border assembly plants.
“They think that we are weak because we are women. We’re courageous, and if they don’t show respect to us, we will make them respect us by our own means,” she wrote.
“I am an instrument of vengeance.”
The woman, wearing a blond wig or with dyed hair, boarded a bus Aug. 28, pulled out a pistol and shot the driver dead, witnesses said.
She struck again the next day, telling the driver, “You guys think you’re real bad, don’t you?” before shooting him, a witness told the newspaper Diario de Juarez.
