The First Lady and her daughters hit Broadway Sunday to watch “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” — and for a moment it looked like the women in the President’s life might need Spidey’s help.
Before Michelle Obama and her girls, Sasha, 11, and Malia, 14, arrived at the Foxwoods Theatre, a boneheaded theatergoer joked to cops that his luggage might “blow up.”
Law enforcement sources identified the jokester as Ross Mandell, 43, of Charlotte, N.C., who was on a business trip to the city and decided to catch the 3 p.m. matinee. He apparently didn’t know the First Lady and her daughters were attending when he and other ticketholders were asked to check their bags at the door.
“Yeah, I’ll check my bags, but if the show is bad, they’ll blow up,” Mandell said, according to a police source.
“It was a stupid thing to say to any cops, but particularly in this case,” the source said.
NYPD officers and the Secret Service interviewed the man and a suited-up bomb squad officer inspected the bags, but found nothing suspicious. Mandell was not arrested.
The performance went on, and afterward Michelle Obama and her girls were hustled into a waiting SUV. Before Michelle and the kids hit Broadway, the First Lady spoke at a Westchester campaign event, telling the crowd to lend a hand because “it’s all on the line.”
“You all rest yourselves. Rest yourselves, because we want you working.,” Mrs. Obama said to laughter.
Meanwhile, President Obama refused to apologize for a campaign operative’s suggestion his GOP challenger Mitt Romney fudged the date of his resignation as CEO from Bain Capital to the
Securities Exchange Commission. Obama surrogate Stephanie Cutter suggested Romney committed a felony.
“No, we will not apologize,” Obama told WAVY-TV of Portsmouth, Va., vowing to continue attacking Romney on his private equity record.
