A scene straight out of TLC’s “Hoarders” has one family facing serious charges in Texas.
Five people were arrested after authorities in Parker County found 58 dogs and an 18-month old in a crib surrounded by human waste late last week.
The dogs, according to the Parker County Sheriff's office, were living in abysmal conditions.
Thirty-one of the 58 dogs were found inside a crate, surrounded by their own urine and feces and with no food.
"The conditions were so poor that it created a serious health hazard for the occupants as well," the Sheriff's Department said in a statement. "There was an overwhelming foul odor of dog feces which was detectable from outside the residence. It was extremely unhealthy for both humans and animals."Authorities were tipped off by a neighbor, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
Outside the house, more than a dozen puppies were found in similar conditions.
They were taken to a local animal shelter where some were euthanized. Others died over the weekend due to the conditions.
The Weldons, according to the sheriff, were allowed to adopt animals from a shelter without a background check.
"This is totally unacceptable and very disheartening," the sheriff said. "Adopting stricter policies and enforcing them would deter would-be hoarders and keep animals from suffering needlessly."
According to Parker County Sheriff Records, Teresa Lynn Weldon, the baby's grandmother, faces charges of child endangerment and criminal neglect, as well as charges related to writing a bad check. She was released from jail on Sunday after posting bail.
The child's grandfather, Harry George Weldon, was charged with animal cruelty and was also released Sunday. The child's mother, Amanda Gayle Weldon, was freed Monday after being arrested on charges of child endangerment.
The child's uncles, Christopher Brett and Joseph Wayne Weldon were also arrested on charges of animal cruelty and child endangerment.
