After the horrifying freak injury Kevin Ware suffered many were left wondering if Ware and his family would have to be stuck with the medical expenses. Louisville has come out and stated that Ware will not be footing the bill for the hefty expenses that are to come.

USA Today reported the ray of good news as Ware was discharged from the hospital today. For all Louisville athletes the procedure goes as so: their personal or family insurance serves as the primary coverage, and the school acts as a co-provider for athletic injuries. Louisville  senior associate athletic director for media relations Kenny Klein explained:

“There is generally no out-of-pocket medical expenses for the student-athlete or his family, and none for Kevin in this instance,”

The NCAA requires that all student-athletes have medical insurance in case of injury–in some instances schools buy insurance for their athletes, but it’s not a requirement. To supplement school insurance policies the NCAA does allow for coverage of up to $90,000 if an athlete is hurt during a championship event, such as the tournament.

So in the case of Ware his family insurance along with the coverage from the school’s would apply first, then the NCAA supplemental insurance because he was hurt in a championship game, counting up to $90,000.

A big burden has been lifted for Ware who is slowly on the road to total recovery.
