A Secret Service dog tragically fell to its death Saturday night in New Orleans while doing a security sweep of six-story building next a hotel where Vice President Joe Biden was hosting an event.
The Belgian Malinois fell from the roof of a parking garage deck adjacent to the Ritz-Carlton where Biden was speaking at a fundraiser for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.
The dog was working in the Premier Parking garage on Iberville Street near the French Quarter hotel blocks away from rowdy Bourbon Street when it fell off the roof around 6 pm Saturday night, according to New Orleans Police.
Secret Service agents and police rushed the black and brown Belgian shepherd to a Metairie veterinary hospital in a motorcade to help the injured animal.
Veterinarians were unable to revive the dog.
Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told CNN the death was a 'tragic accident.'

It uses sociable Belgian Malinois because they are small and have short hair, making it easy for them to work in the heat.
Each dog and its handler has to complete 20 weeks of training before beginning work, the agency said.
When it's time for a dog to retire -- usually after about 10 years -- it is retired to its handler.
After graduating from basic training, each canine retrains eight hours every week for the rest of its career.

Secret Service told the Daily Mail that this is the first time an accident of this nature has happened.
Inside the event about 450 people paid between $250 and $2,500 to attend, Mr Biden said Senator Landrieu, a Democrat running for a fourth six-year term next year, 'bleeds Louisiana.'
'I have never, never, never seen anyone fight harder for her state,' Biden said during his 20-minute speech. 'I have never seen anyone who's more effective for her state.'
