WHITE PLAINS — The death of a 21-year-old man whose body was found in a pool of blood outside a Hale Avenue garage “is being investigated as a suicide,” police Lt. Eric Fischer said Wednesday afternoon.
Fischer said the man is from southern Westchester and that police are withholding his name until his family has been notified.
The man apparently plunged from the top floor of the 11-story garage that serves the Westchester One office building, located across the street, shortly after 1 p.m. A passerby who saw the body lying on the sidewalk called police. Fischer said no witnesses who saw the fall have been found. The garage is next to the Crowne Plaza hotel.
Police said the man did not work in the area and did not have a car parked in the garage. No note was found in his pockets. Police and fire personnel spent more than an hour at the scene, and closed off the lower end of Hale Avenue. It was reopened after workers from the Westchester Medical Examiner’s Office removed the body.
“It’s just horrible,” said Angelica Lopez, who stopped to watch as the body was placed on a gurney. “I can’t imagine why anyone would be so upset that they would do something like this.”
An autopsy is expected to be completed today.
